Weekly Report #72 - Skateboard Experience, Rust Conf and Follow Public Beta (Includes Invitation Code)

Preface#

weekly_review_20240908

This article is a record and reflection on life from 2024-09-03 to 2024-09-08.

I attended Rust Conf 2024 in Shanghai for two days, gained a lot of insights, and under the guidance of colleagues, I restructured my API Server written in Rust; Follow further expanded its public beta scale, and I received 10 invitation codes, which will be distributed in the comments section of this article; there were also many interesting things.

Lake Game#

Although the team's project was successfully launched last week, there still seem to be many tasks to handle. Working late, combined with morning runs, has blurred the line between work and sleep, and sometimes I find it hard to fall asleep even after lying down for a long time. After a few days of this, I felt a bit low on energy, so I decided to relax by delivering mail in the game Lake in the evening.

I learned about it from a tweet by Randy a long time ago. As a fan of games like the "Life is Strange series," I have always been interested in this more life-oriented, calm yet thought-provoking type of game.

As I mentioned in "Weekly Report #70 - The Disappearing Neighborhood, Burnout, and Boreout," having left my hometown early, I now hardly have any childhood friends left to connect with. The scenery of the small town and the villages in my memory are, of course, worlds apart, yet I still yearn for the feeling of being able to greet neighbors in their little houses and listen to their stories. Perhaps this way of life makes one feel more grounded and content compared to the bustling city.

Don't ask me why a programmer has to play the role of a programmer after work; I used to play "Shenzhen I/O" to simulate being a programmer at work 🤡...

Skateboarding Experience Class#

I have been roller skating for over ten years since childhood and learned skateboarding for a short period a few years ago, but it wasn't very systematic. I've always wanted to improve my skills so that I could get used to skateboarding on the road.

Since it was just a one-hour experience class, the coach started with some basic movements like gliding, putting the board down, picking it up, and turning, correcting many of the irregular movements I had when I practiced before. I gradually got used to the feeling on the board. Later, I fell hard twice while trying to go down a steep slope; it hurt, but it also provided a sense of stress relief after exercise and made me more aware of the charm of this sport.

However, systematic courses are quite expensive, so I might consider practicing on my own for a while and then find a local coach to learn when I go to Chiang Mai in October.

I won't post pictures of my bad falls.

RSSHub Deployment Migration#

rsshub_hits

A few days ago, I accidentally synced OneDrive and iCloud using a proxy set up on my VPS, which exhausted the traffic on my main machine, causing my self-hosted RSSHub to go down. Since it is listed as a public instance on the RSSHub official website, I thought I should maintain it, so I migrated it to another idle 2C2G machine and found that the machine was instantly overwhelmed, with an average of over 100 requests per minute...

After some research, I found that Zeabur's template cannot access the browserless/chrome service via WebSocket. The image I am currently using does not include Puppeteer, making it impossible to scrape many websites, resulting in many routes becoming invalid. So I made some changes and published a Zeabur template that now supports one-click deployment of an RSSHub instance with Puppeteer — "RSSHub (With Puppeteer)," feel free to deploy it with one click.

I also deployed one for myself, contributing to the RSS cause.

Rust Conf#

I didn't take many photos this time; I borrowed some from my colleagues.

It seems that every year there are one or two months when I participate in various offline activities more "actively," gathering with remote colleagues/friends. After attending ETHShenzhen not long ago, I invited some colleagues and friends to Shanghai to attend Rust Conf, spending two fun days and nights.

I scoured the surroundings, attended a few interesting talks, chatted briefly with new and old friends, and ultimately gathered in a corner of the venue to review and modify my poorly written Rust code, learning a lot.

As soon as I arrived in the morning, I ordered a book titled "Rust Programming" from JD, and I started learning it in the hotel lobby as soon as it arrived...

Personal Life Snapshots#

Interesting Design Encounter#

Last week, I tried a forest cabin in Mogan Mountain, Huzhou. The experience itself was ordinary, but I was deeply impressed by an interesting big-eyed tree I saw on the way back, which felt very Japanese under the filter of the car window.

Interesting Things and Items#

Inputs#

Although most interesting inputs are automatically synced in the "Yu's Life" Telegram channel, I still selected a portion to list here, making it feel more like a newsletter. Additionally, I built a microblog using the Telegram Channel messages as content sources — "daily.pseudoyu.com," making it easier to browse.

Follow Public Beta Special Event#

In a previous article "Weekly Report #67 - Using Follow to Reshape My Information Input System," I shared my experience using the Follow app, which continues to impress me.

More than a month has passed, and it remains the software I open frequently every day. The software has also iterated many new features and details, and the public beta scale is gradually expanding.

I asked DIYgod for 10 invitation codes as a benefit for my blog/channel readers.

How to Participate#

Comment below this article with your thoughts on reading, information flow, RSS usage, or anything related to the weekly report. I will select 10 people to distribute invitation codes at 22:00 Beijing time on September 9. I will announce the list in the comments section and on the "Yu's Life" Telegram channel. Selected users can contact [email protected] or message me on any of my social platforms.

Feel free to continue leaving comments after the event; if I can obtain more slots later (or if I work hard to sign in to earn Tokens), I will continue to distribute them in the comments section. Welcome to participate.
